Categories for Submissions 1. Freshman/Sophomore Documented Research or Critical Thinking 2. Junior/Senior Documented Research or Critical Thinking 3. Freshman through Senior Poetry Writing (one poem per student) 4. Freshman through Senior Fiction Writing Awards 1. First prize in each category: $200 for the student 2. Second prize in each category: $150 for the student 3. Third prize in each category: $100 for the student 4. Honorable Mention in each category: $50 5. All winners receive free conference registration, including one lunch and two breakfasts, and each institution will receive a $50 subsidy (for hotel costs) for each first and second place winner who attends the FCHC Conference.
This prize is provided as reimbursement for costs at the conference. Only students who register for and attend the conference will receive awards. Contest Rules 1. Member institutions may submit only THREE PAPERS in each category. A student may submit only ONE poem. Papers which have won a contest previously may not be submitted. 2. Winning contestants will be required to present an organized, concise overview (3 minutes) of their papers, an excerpt from the story, or read the poem at the FCHC Conference. Only students who register for and attend the conference will receive awards. Paper Format 1. Length: Limit of 10 pages. Works Cited and appendices do not count as part of the 10 pages.
2. The paper must be in 12 point font or larger, double spaced.
3. The paper should not give any clue to your identity or to that of your school.
4. Papers (except fiction and poetry) must contain correct grammar, mechanics, and documentation. Papers with errors will be disqualified.
5. Documentation must be in MLA or APA style. Submission Process 1. Each submission must include: a. Four copies of the paper, poem or story. Make sure that the author’s name or school does not appear anywhere in the paper. b. Completed FCHC Cover Sheet. The Honors Director must sign the FCHC Cover Sheet. Only entries from the Honors Director will be accepted. 2. The entire package should be postmarked by November 16, 2009. No fax or email copies are accepted. The deadline is firm because the judges are committed to these dates. 3. Fax and email copies are not accepted. Mail entries to: Dr. Kathleen Lazarus, Writing Contest Coordinator Daytona State College: Daytona Campus 1200 West International Speedway Blvd. Daytona Beach, Florida FL 32114 Download the Cover Sheet Judging Directors will be notified of their winning entries no later than January 12, 2010. All entries will be judged by a panel of at least three judges from a variety of academic disciplines in community colleges and universities. The judges will look for scholarship, creativity, style, and correct standard English. |
